Hinduism is one of the oldest Religions that is still practiced in the world, with certain practices dating back many thousands of years. The idea and the history of Hinduism is related closely to the religions of Jainism, Sikhism and Buddhism.
The term "Hindu" comes from the river at the North-west of India near the "Sindhu" river, and Hinduism itself originates from near the river of Indus in Pakistan.
Most Hindus use the Veda as their Religious text, Hindus believe that these texts (the Vedas) were received by highly educated people directly from God, and were passed from generation to generation by word of mouth. The Vedas are made up of four parts, and each Veda has four parts within them which are arranged in order of time.
The Samhitas this is the most ancient part of the Vedas and consists of hymns of praise to God.
The Brahmanas which are rituals and prayers to guide the priests in their duties.
The Aranyakas which is about worship and meditation.
and The Upanishads which consist of the mystical and philosophical teachings in Hinduism.
Most Hindus use a system of values known as "Dharma" to dictate how the run there life. Dharma in Hinduism means "morality" and refers to the power which upholds Society and even the Universe. Hindus believe that Dharma was revealed in the Veda, although this texts refer to righteousness as "Rita"; Dharma maintains all things in the Universe and makes us Moral people.
Hindus believe that life is a cycle of birth death and rebirth, which is governed across all lifetimes by "Karma", which means "action", and these actions good or bad perpetrated the "being" resulting in either good or bad things happening in this life, and future Samsara or reincarnations.
Hindus believe in a supreme God, whose virtues are exuded in multiple Deities which emanate from him.
Ganesha – The son of Shiva and Parvati Depicted as an elephant riding a mouse, he is the lord of success and the destroyer of Evil and obstacles.
Shiva – The most powerful deity in Hinduism. And one of the main Gods in Hinduism, represent dissolution and death also known as Bhole-Nath.
Krishana – a fellow God of Shiva in the Hindu Holy trinity, a blue skinned deity who transcends Indian thought, life, cult and folklore
Rama – a symbol of chivalry and virtue, Rama is "the ideal husband, son and above all the ideal King."
Hanuman – the mighty ape that helped Rama in his fight against evil forces, Hanuman is worshipped as a sign of perseverance, devotion and physical strength.
Vishnu – The third member of the holy trinity, is a peace loving deity worshipped for perseverance and as a sustainer of life.
Lakshmi – is depicted as a golden woman with four hands on a lotus, the word "Lakshmi" is derived from the Sanskrit word "Laksya" and is the goddess of wealth both spiritual and material.
Durga – known also as Bhavani, she is the mother Goddess and the personification of divine energy. She is most commonly presented riding a lion.
Kali – is the dark goddess and was born out of the brow of Durga during a battle with evil forces.
Saraswati – is the Goddess of knowledge and learning it is from here the Vedas were born, she endowed humans with the powers of wisdom, learning and speech.
