Vishnu‏

Vishnu is the second god in the Hindu holy trinity known as triumvirate the other two being Shiva & Brahama. Vishnu is the protector of the Universe and also the preserver. His role is to maintain the balance of good and evil.

He has been reincarnated 9 times, including incarnations as Rama and Krishna & Buddha, the other incarnations being Matsya (fish) Kurma (turtle) Veraha (boar) Narasimha (half man half lion) Vamana (a sage dwarf with the ability to grow) and Parasurama (a fierce hunter); But it is believed by Hindus that he will be brought back one last time when the end of the world is upon us.

Vishnu is mentioned many times in the "Rig Veda" the most holy of the Vedas. Vishnu is mainly associated with the sun and light, in later texts he is mentioned as the leader of the seven solar gods or Adityas.

Vishnu, travels on the king of birds the Garuda and his consort is Lakshmi who is often portrayed with him. Vishnu is often presented with four arms & blue skin tones, in his hands are always four objects representing the things he is in charge of these items are:

The Conch which makes the "Om" sound standing for the primeval sound of creation
The Chakra representing the mind
The lotus flower symbolising the beauty of existence and liberation
The mace an example of both physical and metal strength

Vishnu has his own set of worshippers known a Vaishnava, they consider him to be the greatest of the gods.
