Acupuncture

The word "Acupuncture" is made up of the Latin words acus, and pungere, meaning "Needle and "to prick". Acupuncture points are located along Meridian lines on the body. A Meridian line is a line on which the lives "Qi" or Life force flows.

Their are 14 Meridians used in Acupuncture, these are the 12 main meridians that run down the arms and legs and two Mai or "extra meridians" which are considered storage vessels for "Qi" In acupuncture both physical & mental pain and illness are considered to be a sign that the body is not correctly balanced and understands the link that emotions play in illness, it also considers every bodily function and organ to be both interdependent and inter connected.

Acupuncture is used to restore the body’s natural balance, and as every person’s body is unique the treatment will vary from person to person.

It is believed that when a person is unwell it i due to a blockage preventing the Qi to flow freely between the meridians and that by inserting the fine needles used in acupuncture not only is the flow of Qi restored but also the body’s healing response will also be triggered. One theory is that the practice of acupuncture stems back to ancient Chinese soldiers who were wounded in battle using their arrows to treat & heal.

In Europe an ice man dating back to 3,300 B.C had 15 tattoos upon his boy some of which were located on acupuncture points. After an article in the New York times by James Reston, in the early 1970's acupuncture became more popular and in the U.S in 1973 acupuncture became a tax deductable medical service.
