Zang Fu is the basis to T.C.M (Traditional Chinese Medicine) it describes the interaction and functions of the body within the body. In total there are 12(twelve) Zang - Fu organs each with a corresponding organ, all except the pericardium the double walled sac that contains the Heart and the roots of the major vessels, referred to in Zang - Fu as the organ that protects the Heart the San Jiao, thee cavitys near the top of the body.
The Zang organs are the Yin and Fu organs are the Yang. Zang organs are concerned with the manufacture and storing of life's essence such as blood and Qi (life force energy) whilst the Fu Organs are concerned with receiving and digesting food - transmission of waste.
The Zang Organs are: The Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lungs, Kidneys and the pericardium. Whilst the Fu organs are: The Small & Large Intestines, The Urinary Bladder, The Stomach and San Jiao or triple burner which covers the Thoracic upper & Lower Dorsal Cavities.
There is also a group of organs similar to that of the Zang organs referred to as the extraordinary Fu, although they are named Fu their functions are similar to that of the Zang organs. These organs are brain, one marrow, bones, vessels, the gall bladder, and the uterus
Each pair of organs are assigned to one of the Wu Xing, otherwise known as the Five Stages. The five stages in Wu Xing are: Wood, Earth, Fire, Metal and Water. For example the Bladder and Kidneys are Yin and Yang Water Organs.
Anatomy in Traditional Chinese Medicine did not develop in the same way as Western medicine as they did not Dissect cadavers to learn about anatomy but still needed to describe how bodily functions worked because of this Traditional Chinese Medicine has concepts such a Meridians (power lines within the body) in it.
Organs are not described by there anatomical position as they are in Western Medicine, but instead by their roles and connections within the body.
In Zang - fu each organ regulates a further two organs either negatively or positively, and as such diagnosing a problem within the body rely's upon seeing patterns of dysfunction within the body as a whole.
